Huawei Harmony OS Remain Smartphone A Question Mark

by Linda Sui | Aug 10, 2019

As expected, Huawei finally unveils the home-grown Harmony OS today at the developer conference in China today. Unlike widely expected, it is not based in Linux. Instead, Harmony OS is microkernel based distributed OS, initially designed for non-smartphone devices, such as smart screen, smart watches, in-vehicle system and smart speakers.

Huawei positions Harmony OS as a unified platform to be adopted in multiple products in 5G era.  We view it fits well in Huawei’s “1+8+N” strategy.  However, smartphone remains a big question mark in the picture, while Huawei said the new OS can be used in smartphones immediately if needed.

When and how Harmony OS will be adopted in smartphones? Will it challenge Android and win in 5G era? How does it share the similarity of the under-developing Google's Fuchsia?
