Starting with M7 and M7 Power, Gionee is Betting Big on Bezel-less Display

by Yiwen Wu | Sep 30, 2017

Gionee unveiled its first bezel-less smartphone models M7 and M7 Power in September 25th in China.

M7 is positioned as a high-end model with 6-inch 18:9 bezel-less AMOLED display and enhanced security features as the key selling points. Specification wise, M7 comes with Helio P30, 8MP front camera, 16MP+8MP dual rear camera, 6GB RAM, 64GB ROM, and 4000mAh battery. Gionee slightly increased its retail price by RMB100 ($15) from predecessor models indicating higher component prices and the vendor’s efforts to lift up its product portfolio.

M7 Power, on the other hand, is positioned as a middle-end device differentiated by its 5000mAh battery and a 6-inch 8:9 bezel-less LCD display. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset and equipped with 4GB RAM, 64GB ROM, 8MP front camera, and 13MP rear camera. Unlike M7, M7 Power will be available also in the vendor’s overseas markets.

Bezel-less display is the key differentiator for the two newly-launched models. In their launch event, Gionee re-confirmed its plan to equip bezel-less display for all upcoming models under its S series, F series, and Steel series. We believe Gionee’s betting on bezel-less display is a smart move: Display leads hardware innovation in smartphone industry and bezel-less display will lead the wave before the bendable display and foldable display start to take off from 2019 / 2020 onwards.

However, it is worth noting that vivo and many other Chinese vendors are embracing bezel-less display as well, with flooding models expected to see in the following quarters. In addition to avoid potential supply constraints on key components,  how to differentiate and stand out from bezel-less wave is another key issue for Gionee and all other OEMs,
