Sony to Drop Sub-Flagship Category of Smartphones

by Rajeev Nair | May 26, 2017

Sony going forward would be focussing only on the Flagship and Mid-tier smartphones. In line, with its steady retreat from the smartphone market, the vendor would now be pulling the plug on what it calls the ‘premium standard’ category. Per our latest report available here from the Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) Service, Sony held less than 1% of the global smartphone market share in Q1 2017.

The vendor despite launching five handsets in the first quarter of 2017 has not managed to get the momentum back in the market. Chinese vendors with better manufacturing efficiencies and economies of scale, have grown in the global market at the expense of global vendors like Sony.

Sony’s handset volumes in Q1 2017 hit an all-time low and we recommend several steps in our latest insight report on the vendor that could help in the revival.
