Larger Samsung Gear S3 Does It All, Goes 'Utilitarian Chic'

by Cliff Raskind | Sep 03, 2016

In the year since launch, Samsung's Gear S2 and especially the Gear S2 Classic have helped the Korean giant bounce back to 14.9% marketshare over the last 3 quarters combined. It did this by offering the most watch-like true smartwatch out there capable of running 3rd party apps. Now comes the beefier Gear S3 unveiled at IFA, and it represents an interesting strategy by Samsung.

Consider the recently released Samsung Gear Fit 2 fitnessband— which at roughly U$D145 wholesale sports a larger display and features previously reserved for smartwatches. These include improved notifications and music, better onscreen support for fitness apps and mapping, and built-in GPS. Among proprietary platforms, the Fit 2 arguably offers even more bang for the buck than the new Fitbit
Charge2.  If the Fit 2 successfully addresses the needs of a segment, it effectively gives the R&D team more elbow room to work with in designing larger smartwatches.

In the Gear S3, Samsung has thrown in
everything that can set smartwatches apart from bands (cellular/voice calls, apps, more high-end sensors). And with  4 days of expected battery life, differentiates from other smartwatches by not compromising the day to day practicality of the device by using a battery that lacks stamina .

And with the Gear S3 Frontier in particular (pictured below) all of this becomes aesthetically pleasing in a rugged style reminiscent of a heavy duty military timepiece—
utilitarian chic, if you will. The Gear3 may be a bit of a brute that does little to make smartwatches appeal to women, but that's okay if it pushes the boundaries of what's possible in a smartwatch.
