ST Micro's path to growth features eye-opening depth and breadth in wearables

by Cliff Raskind | May 19, 2016

As overall global phone growth tapers and ST Micro exits the set-top box space, the company's Capital Markets analyst event in New York reveals strength, leadership and a coherent path to regain growth across multiple technology segments.  Amid a string of recent top line and gross margin challenged quarters, but a 2015 return to positive cash flow, ST Micro needs flawless strategy and execution to reclaim the glory of its halcyon days supplying Nokia.

The strategic focus moving forward is in securely enabling the right mix of high growth areas given its bedrock capabilities-

Smart Driving
Smart Industry
Smart Home & City
Smart Things

Within Smart Things, ST's presence in Wearables spans-

Micro-Controllers, Connectivity (BT LE, Secure NFC), Audio (Amps), Power Mgt (LED/OLED, Battery/Thin film, Energy Harvesting, DC converters, LED/OLED), UI (Touch Sensing), Protections (Filtering),  Signal Conditioning and, critically,  Smart Sensing (Motion, Environmental, Microphone MEMS).

Strategy Analytics anticipates (and will examine in upcoming "Enabling Technology" reports) that environmental sensors, along with biosensors will continue to emerge as highly strategic, high growth areas in the race for competitive differentiation in multiple segments of wearables ecosystem.
