The Galaxy S8 + DeX Dock: An Idea Whose TECH has Come?

by Cliff Raskind | Apr 03, 2017

The phone-becomes-your-PC concept is nothing new.  And while it has been tried by Motorola, Microsoft and others— this time I believe it has a great chance of taking root with offerings like DeX Dock, the S8/S8+ and 10 nanometer chips like the Snapdragon 835.

The capability will be initially targeted towards business users. If I were a frequent traveler to or from the Middle Eastern/African nations now facing laptop bans from the US and other governments, I would be taking a serious look at the Galaxy S8 right now.

Corporate IT departments will value tight Knox security and the added ability to leverage facial recognition, fingerprints and iris scanning on the S8 for added factors of authentication. In addition, IT can harness OTA to force corporate compliance on software versioning and other policies and, critically, virtualize fully functional cloud desktops by leveraging best-in-class partners like Citrix and VMWare, which leave zero data vulnerable on the device.

Strategy Analytics predicts the S8 and S8+ will meet success in the smartphone market, lifting profitability and solidifying Samsung’s leading smartphone position worldwide this year. Adding the DeX Dock configuration can also ease traveler security hassles, be it corporate IT or at the airport. Lastly, I also find it heartening that cheaper iterations of this setup in the future may benefit less affluent users in developing markets where, for example, one household might have a single large screen and keyboard that is shared by all family members.
