IoT @ MWC 2018 Day 4: Cisco claims first Global NB IoT Platform & wins Automotive Innovation Award, AT&T talks AI, Telefonica ticks all buzzword boxes with Industry 4.0 drive and Korea wins big in GSMA Mobile Awards

Mobile World Congress (MWC 2018) is the biggest show on the Mobile and Smart Connected Ecosystem that is taking place Barcelona, from Feb 26 to Mar 1, 2018. With in excess of 100,000 attendees expected for the third year in a row, MWC 2018 is an event of massive scope that brings together – from all corners of the globe – all major players in mobility.

With lots of talk about 5G and low power connectivity for IoT, Cisco claimed an industry first by launching its Narrow Band IoT (NB-IoT) platform worldwide. Cisco Jasper claims that Control Center for NB-IoT is the first such commercially available global platform. The launch comes after a number of live trials, including implementations with China Unicom and Optus in Australia. China Unicom said that it saw adoption from businesses across a variety of smart-city applications, including smart metering, parking, fire control, and street lighting.

AT&T and CarForce are developing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to create an AI focused on managing car maintenance and predicting car problems for dealerships, fleet managers, and repair shops. Denmark will be the test site for an Internet of Things solutions, which will debut in the first quarter of this year. In that regard, it will be launching through FTZ, which maintains distribution to around 1,500 service shops. CarForce will also be providing access to a connected garage experience to around 80 percent of Denmark’s independent dealers and garages, after which it intends to launch in the United States, France, and Germany later this year.

CarForce’s software is utilized for in-car diagnostics to provide almost real-time analysis of customers’ vehicles. AI factors in by providing preventative and predictive maintenance. In theory, this could also reduce vehicle downtime and increase supply and repair efficiencies, with notifications sent to customers when repairs or fluid changes are required, for example. AT&T provides the connectivity to global LTE networks thropugh its SIMs. Also part of the new IoT Platform will be AT&T’s Data Flow program–a cloud manager of sensor data meant to aid businesses in scaling to meet demand. It’s scheduled for availability in the second quarter of this year.

Telefonica demonstrated its vision of Digitalisation of Industry, highlighting use cases for its Industry 4.0 initiatives. Telefónica demonstrated how the whole process of manufacture, receipt and distribution in the automotive sector can be transformed using new technology. This will allow improvements in traceability, process and decision-making, automation and information immutability.

To achieve this, the technological components integrated into this industrial supply chain ecosystem recreated for Mobile World Congress were IoT, the blockchain, advanced connectivity (5G and private LTE) technologies and augmented reality (AR).

Telefónica showed the initial results of the project it is working on with SEAT and Ficosa Specifically, it represents how the use of blockchain technology can provide information traceability, transparency and veracity in the supply chain, from the providers’ supply of components (for example, rear-view mirrors manufactured by Ficosa in Soria) through to the purchase of the SEAT vehicle by the end consumer of various countries.

Finally, South Korea and China came out with the plaudits in the GSMA 2018 Glomo awards around IoT (which take place at MWC every year).

  • SK Telecom & uLikekorea won the award for best enterprise innovation for LiveCare, a low-power, long-range LoRa-based IoT service that enables farmers to monitor and manage their livestock in real time. By orally administrating a bio capsule embedded with a LoRa communication module into the cow, farmers can monitor the body temperature and acidity level (pH) of cows to detect signs of illness, determine optimal timing of insemination, and recognize signs of calving. The data measured with the capsule are sent to the server automatically through LoRa station to be analyzed for specific patterns. Upon detecting abnormal health conditions, notifications are immediately sent to the farmer’s mobile device or PC.
  • KT won the best healthcare award for its for KT Digital Healthcare Solution & Platform “m-Hospital”. KT’s Digital Healthcare Solution is portable diagnostic equipment that enables diagnoses anytime, anywhere and therefore resolves issue of infrastructure imbalance, providing more patients access to quick diagnosis and effective treatment. Further, KT’s digital healthcare platform (“m-hospital”) connects to diverse diagnostic devices and integrates diagnostic data for each patient to enable systematic patient consultation and remote cooperation.
  • Huawei won the best smart city solution for its NB-IoT Smart City Solution as well as the green mobile award and the outstanding contributiuon to mobility award, in a successful year for the Chinese behemoth.
  • In another ward and for a second year running, Cisco Jasper won the best mobile for automotive innovation award for its Control Center for Connected Cars
