Interesting to see
Xiaomi today unveil its new
Smart Glasses concept.
Billed as "an engineer's look into an advanced future", the
specs appear good on paper. They include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, quadcore ARM processor, Android fork, 5MP camera, MicroLEDs for backlighting, sunlight-friendly monochrome panel, and 51g weight, wrapped up in a cool sunglasses-type formfactor. No word yet on battery life or
cost, but we expect perhaps 1-6hrs of power (in the real world) and a retail price around the US$200-700 range. There is no 4G or 5G at this point.
Killer
apps touted for it include voice calls, contacts, messages, notifications, smart home alarms, office info apps, maps, navigation, photos, teleprompter, and real-time audio-to-text translation. Nothing groundbreaking there, but enough to keep most people
occupied most of the time.
Shipping is unconfirmed, but we speculate a commercial
launch is due for 2022 or 2023 at the latest.
China, India and Europe are likely the priority markets (but not the US).
Xiaomi Smart Glasses are yet
another new device for the burgeoning
smartglasses category. There are more models out there than many folks realize.
