Baselworld 2019: Day 1 - Smartwatches

by Steven Waltzer | Mar 21, 2019

Strategy Analytics Wearables service brings you daily coverage of Baselworld 2018, the largest annual watch and jewelry show during its 102nd year from Basel, Switzerland. Our Day 1 blog will focus on smartwatches from the show floor.  Strategy Analytics defines smartwatches as those connected timepieces capable of running 3rd party apps.  Like last year, the presence of connected wristwear, and particularly smartwatches has been muted at Baselworld this year due to recent high-profile launches from Apple, Fitbit, and Samsung.

  • Tag Heuer has announced a golf version of their Connected Modular 45 Wear OS smartwatch, alongside a new Tag Golf app. The device sports golf-inspired design, with improved shock-resistance, two included straps (a green and white golf themed fabric, as well as a black rubber strap), and premium materials such as ceramic and titanium. The app comes pre-loaded with 39,000 golf courses for 2D and 3D mapping, records shot distance, and keeps track of scores. The new device is available today for a retail price of $1,850 US.

The Tag Heuer Connected Modular 45 has been the only major smartwatch announcement from the show floor so far.  We predict volumes will be niche at this price point as high-tier smartwatches have struggled to gain traction, accounting for less than 1 percent of smartwatch shipments globally in 2018.  Consumers struggle to see the value proposition of a family heirloom that will become technically obsolete in less than 10 years.
