Nearly 3 of every 4 smartwatches shipped in Q2 2015 were Apple Watches
According to our most recent market share tracking from Strategy Analytics wearables
service, pent up demand for the Apple Watch coupled with sustained country-by-country sales momentum throughout the launch quarter resulted in
Apple shipping an estimated 4 million units globally in Q2 2015.
While existing smartwatch vendors held their own and even grew modestly in some cases, the story in Q2 was really all about Apple raising the tide for all. The “
Global Smartwatch Vendor Marketshare: Q2 2015” report details overall smartwatch shipments that - thanks to the Apple Watch - ballooned over 400% in Q2 2015 as compared to the same quarter of 2014.
In my view, predictions of Tim Cook’s first product flopping have been greatly exaggerated. In less than one quarter the Apple Watch has closed in on the number of smartwatch industry shipments in all of 2014, and may have surpassed it were it not for supply-side teething pains and a production line that still needs to optimize building such a miniaturized yet premium product at Apple scale.
It's very early days for mass market smartwatches. ASP's will drop, experiences will improve dramatically, apps leveraging the
unique I/O attributes that wearable devices bring to the table will proliferate. The future is bright for wearables.
