Q1 '22: Transsion Lost Leadership in Africa Smartphone Market

by Peng Peng | May 16, 2022

Africa & Middle East is Transsion's major market, in which Transsion led the smartphone shipments from Q2 2021. However, the leadership was ended by Samsung in Q1 2022.

Transsion Holdings is a China-based vendor who manufactures cost-effective phones and other consumer electronics for emerging markets. It owns three phone brands Tecno, itel, and Infinix and focuses on ultra-low, entry and mid-tier segments.

With a number of well-defined models across entry to high tier launched in recent quarters, Samsung imposed strong competition to Transsion's smartphone line-up and received shipment and marketshare growths. Transsion's itel and Infinix suffered losses in smartphone shipments in Q1 2022.

Transsion still led the handset shipments in Africa, due to a big volume share of its feature phones. Shipments of feature phones will continue falling. Transsion should take advantage of its local ecosystem to enhance its smartphone sales.
