The G Pure is among the most affordable models along side the Samsung A12 5G in the $100-190 wholesale price tier and the Samsung Galaxy A02. Of the Top 5 smartphone models all are in the $600+ wholesale tier in Q4 2021. 4 from Apple, 1 from Samsung. These top 5 models captured over 40% of shipment revenues.

Apple iPhone 13 series captured over one third of units shipped in Q4 2021 in USA.

Samsung had a good quarter thanks to the solid performance of its popular Galaxy A Series models like the A32 5G, A12, and A02, ranking as no. 6, no.7, and no.10 respectively in Q4'21.

TCL-Alcatel  continued to have a  presence with 5 models in the top 50. The  TCL 4X 5G claimed 20th place by volume.

OnePlus continues to move forward with 3 models in the top 50 list.  The OnePlus Nord N200 5G ranked #31.

Starting Q1  2022, HMD Nokia will look to challenge for prepaid and sub $200 retail price tier devices.

The US smartphone market remains hugely challenging and hugely expensive to participate in. Smart planning and strategies to minimize sales and marketing are essential. Developing preferred brand status in subsets of the market be it budget utility, value optimizer, aspiring techno with refurbished devices  or other will be critical for the chasing pack.

Motorola has captured a share of the exiting LG customer base and has reengaged its own brand advocates in mid and entry tier devices. Key questions for the US smartphone market and Motorola in particular include:

Can it make any inroads in the high end or premium tier in 2022?
What impact will Nokia and other new competitors have on best selling Motorola models?
How vulnerable is Motorola in non-operator channels?
Can Motorola gain a foothold in the nascent foldables market?
