Xiaomi announced three new models on May 31st, 2018 in Shenzhen, China: the high-end Mi8, the premium Mi8 Explorer, and the mid-range Mi8 SE. Our analysts from Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service attended the launch event.
The new Mi8 series mark Xiaomi’s 8th anniversary. Mi8 is an iPhone X-like model with notch display form factor. Mi8 SE even copycats iPhone SE on model name. Mi8 features Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, Samsung AMOLED display and AI-supported imaging function, as well as dual-frequency GPS. Mi8 Explorer upgrades with in-display fingerprint sensor, 3D Face ID, and transparent back body. Mi8 SE comes with a 5.9 inch AMOLED display and downgraded chipset and rear cameras.
Xiaomi maintained cost-leadership for Mi8 series, which we believe is under-priced. It would bring in margin pressure and impact brand lifting, amid upcoming IPO.
