Global Smartphone Sales Will Grow +1.4% YoY in 2018

by Linda Sui | Jun 01, 2018

According to the latest forecast report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service: Global Smartphone Sales Forecast for 88 Countries : 2007 to 2023, global smartphone sales volume will maintain low single digit growth rate in 2018 (+1.4%) and 2019, due to extended smartphone replacement cycle, higher smartphone prices, industry consolidation, shrinking China market, as well as economic headwinds / uncertainties etc.

We expect the growth rate will slightly pick up from 2020 onwards mainly driven by 5G and new hardware innovations. Worldwide smartphone sales volumes will steadily expand by +25% from 2018 to 2023.

Asia Pacific remains as the biggest region, followed by North America. The three largest smartphone countries by far in the next five years will be China, India and the USA, due to their massive populations. However, we forecast China smartphone market will remain a modest annual decline in 2018, mainly blaming to saturated smartphone penetration rate and extended smartphone replacement cycle, as well as economic headwinds (US-China trade war etc.). China smartphone market will see a slight rebound from 2019 onwards, mainly driven by 5G and new technology innovations. In contrast, we forecast India will experience double digit growth rate by smartphone volumes in the following three years, thanks to lower smartphone penetration rate, improved 3G and 4G coverage, as well as reduced tariff rate.

The extensive report forecasts global smartphone sales, for 88 countries worldwide, from 2007 to 2023. Almost every major country worldwide is covered, including the United States, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

This report can be used by operators, software developers, content developers, handset vendors, component makers, car manufacturers and other stakeholders to determine the size and growth rate of the huge global smartphone market.
