Xiaomi Unveiled its Latest Small-bezel Smartphone MIX 2S

by Yiwen Wu | Mar 27, 2018

Xiaomi today officially launched its latest flagship model MIX 2S in Shanghai China, couple hours before Huawei unveiling P20 series model in Paris France.

At the first glance, MIX 2S looks similar to its predecessor MIX 2, the premium model which was launched 6 months ago.  Xiaomi did not adopt the notch design for MIX 2S as what Huawei, OPPO, and vivo have done for their latest flagship models. Although the existing ID design is not perfect -- for example, the position of its front camera could be more user-friendly -- it continued to differentiate the model from the crowd.

The major hardware upgrades of MIX 2S from MIX 2 take place in chipset and camera module. MIX 2S is one of the first few models in the market with the Qualcomm’s latest chipset: Snapdragon 845. MIX 2S features a 12MP +12MP dual rear camera based on SONY IMX 363 sensor, while lack of dual camera was the major drawback of MIX 2. In addition to that, MIX 2S now supports fast wireless charging. Xiaomi unveiled an accompanying wireless charger in the event, which costs roughly USD16 at retail and is compatible to other smartphone models including iPhone X.

At moment, Xiaomi offers three versions of MIX 2S: 6GB+64GB version with a RMB3299 (USD532) retail price tag, 6GB+128GB version with RMB3599 (USD580), and 8GB+256GB version with RMB3999 (USD645). The shipment is going to start on April 3rd, both online and offline in China. We tend to believe that MIX 2S will land in more markets, but no specific plans was communicated in today’s launch event.

Overall, MIX 2S has a good mix between good design and powerful hardware features. MIX 2S is Xiaomi’s latest efforts to lift up its portfolio and brand perception, which is actually critical for its success in in China, the world largest smartphone market now dominated by replacement sales.

We however view MIX 2S is a bit under-priced for the basic versions, which may discourage the purchase intention of affluent users in China. For the advanced version, we are concerned on the supply constraints of the memories, which in turn may post a cap on its shipment. We believe MIX 2S will play a key role for Xiaomi to gain more mind share from its fans across the world. But we tend to be conservative on the model’s total volume contribution to Xiaomi in the first half of 2018.
