Smartphone Sales Grew +66% YoY in Alibaba’s “11.11 Shopping Festival”

“11.11 Shopping Festival” has become the nation-wide online event in China, initiated by Alibaba and now participated by all major e-retailers like JD and Sunning. Alibaba alone recorded RMB168 billion (US$ 25 billion) gross merchandise volume (GMV) on November 11th, 2017, up +39% YoY.

Smartphone remained as the key product category in the festival, whose GMV in Alibaba grew +66% YoY. The result has given a strong push to online smartphone sales in China, which has already been the highest in the world. Looking forward, we expect online will continue its modest growth in the country over the years, although offline will maintain the dominating role in its smartphone distribution flow.

Vendor-wise, the online experts like Huawei Honor and Xiaomi continued to lead in the “11.11 Shopping Festival”. Interestingly, Apple is also a big winner this time. Together with Honor and Xiaomi, it pushed into top 3 vendor list both by volume and by value. In Alibaba’s online platforms, Apple’s GMV grew +108% YoY, and its iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 are among the top 5 best-selling models at the price tier above RMB 3000 (US$450). It echoes well with Apple’s recent rebound in China, supported by strong consumer demand and its continuous leadership in premium smartphone category in the country.
