Today, vivo officially unveiled its latest flagship model X20 and X20 Plus in China next to the Great Wall. The bezel-less super AMOLED display is the biggest selling point of the newly-launched models, followed by the enhanced selfie feature supported by 12MP dual pixel front camera. Positioned as high-end model, vivo X20 comes with 6.0 inch 18:9 super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 660 chipset, 4GB RAM, 12MP + 5MP rear camera, 64GB/128GB ROM, and 3245mAh battery. X20 Plus is upgraded to 6.4 inch display and 3905mAh battery. The newly launched X20 and X20 Plus enriched vivo’s X series which has quietly gained traction in global smartphone market, tracked by our Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service.
X20 is one of the first high-end smartphone models in the world coming with bezel less display. vivo has high expectation on X20, and announced that 3.5 million units of X20 has been ready for the first day shipment. From our perspective, we believe the 18:9 Super AMOLED display and its 85% screen-to-body ratio helped X20 stand out from the competition in the high-end smartphone segment in China at the moment. However, bezel-less display will have become the mainstream for high-end and premium smartphone models in China in H2 2017. Samsung Note 8, LG V30, Apple iPhone X, and Xiaomi MIX 2 have been announced, while Gionee’s M7 and Huawei’s Mate 10 are on the way. It remained to be seen how X20 will maintain its display advantage over the quarters. In addition to that, we caution the cannibalization risk between vivo X20 and vivo X9s which was launched 2 months ago.
