The Dominance of Android and Apple iOS in Global Smartphone Market to be Challenged?

by Yiwen Wu | Jul 02, 2017

According to the latest report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) services, Global Smartphone Sales Forecast by Operating System for 88 Countries: 2007 to 2022, the dominance of Android and Apple iOS on global smartphone market maintained the status quo and is unlikely to be challenged in the upcoming years. Their joint market share however will slightly slip since 2019 and we forecast a grand new smartphone OS -- most probably from China -- will likely emerge from roughly 2019 onwards. The other beneficiaries of Android and Apple iOS's slight decline is Tizen, whose popularity would grow slightly over time, along with their extended penetration across multiple price-tiers, across regions, and in other device form factors.

Our extensive report forecasts global smartphone sales which will grow 7% in 2017, by 14 operating systems, for 88 countries worldwide, from 2007 to 2022. Almost every major country worldwide is covered, including United States, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

This report can be used by operators, software developers, content developers, handset vendors, component makers, car manufacturers and other stakeholders to determine the size and growth rate of the huge global smartphone OS market.
