Acer Focuses on VR Smartphones

by Rajeev Nair | Jun 14, 2017

Acer is to persist with its focus on the niche segment of (Virtual Reality) VR enabled smartphones, as it gears up to launch a new model. The vendor continues to hold less than 1% market share in the global smartphone market, per our latest report available here, from the Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) Service.

Holo 360, its first VR-enabled smartphone was launched in April 2017. The second model is likely on the lines of its predecessor and features a 360-degree camera and real time Internet access for photo sharing. The VR-enabled smartphone features a built in 4G voice.

Strategy Analytics is of the opinion that with the current strategy, Acer is unlikely to make much of an impact, due to its limited retail presence for smartphones beyond few markets such as Taiwan and Netherlands. This alongside higher priced products and deflating bubble of the Virtual Reality hype would make it difficult for the vendor to overcome its challenges in the smartphone segment.
