OPPO Jump As the Largest Smartphone Vendor in Asia Pacific in Q4 2016

According to the latest report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) services, Global Smartphone Vendor Market Share by Region : Q4 2016, global smartphone shipment grew +9% YoY and reached 439 million units. Apple retook top spot and ranked the largest vendor in North America and West Europe thanks to healthy demand of iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models. Samsung slipped to the second place but remained the largest vendor in three regions. Huawei solidified third position and made big progress in West Europe, but saw intensified competition from localized Chinese vendors in Asia and Africa. OPPO maintained the fourth place, as it outperformed in China and Asia. vivo maintained fifth spot for two quarters in a row.

Global smartphone shipment growth was once more dependent on developing markets, with Africa Middle East growing +22% YoY to become the key expanding region worldwide. Asia Pacific also posted +11% YoY growth rate, followed by North America (+10% YoY).

In Asia Pacific, OPPO surpassed Samsung being the largest smartphone vendor for the first time ever, with 12% market share this quarter. OPPO has grown swiftly in China with popular Android models such as the R9 and R9s. It has also quietly made progress in India, Indonesia, Thailand and other emerging markets in this region. OPPO’s next challenge in 2017 is to expand beyond China and continue its momentum in emerging regions like India and Nigeria.
