Road Ahead for Cyanogen: Too steep A Climb?

by Rajeev Nair | Aug 22, 2016

The future of Cyanogen increasingly looks bleak by the day. After a drastic reduction in its work force a month back, the firm finds itself in a bit more murkier situation, with the claims of management having misrepresented Cyanogen Mod’s user base of 25 million.

It could very well be a case of active users having fallen off over a period of time, with limited hardware partners and models based on the platform. These limited partnerships too have been on the retreat with many of the vendors such as Micromax increasingly being non-committal to this Android variant. Strategy Analytics in its insight report (available here) from the Wireless Smartphone Strategy (WSS) service had called out the challenges faced by Cyanogen Mod.

With iOS and Microsoft on the retreat (per our latest OS estimates available here) the clamour for differentiation would only grow, especially in emerging markets. Here in lies the opportunity for Cyanogen OS to position itself as an acquisition target.
