LTE-Advanced Will Become the Leading Technology of Global Smartphone Sales in 2017

by Linda Sui | Apr 22, 2016

According to the latest forecast report from our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) Services: Global Smartphone Sales Forecast by 19 Technologies (Air-Interface) : 2007 to 2022,  4G LTE has replaced 3G as the world's most widely-used smartphone air-interface in 2015. Furthermore, we predict LTE-Advanced will become the leading technology from 2017 onwards, mainly driven by China's quick adoption of 4.5 G LTE-Advanced technology.

We also predict 5G enabled smartphones will emerge first in South Korea and Japan from 2020 onwards, and then gradually extend into other markets.

Meanwhile, EDGE (2G)  smartphones will steadily sunset as chipset makers and device OEMs shift to the HSPA+ / LTE tracks. Same thing for TD-SCDMA and CDMA technologies.
