Farewell Firefox OS Smartphone

by Linda Sui | Dec 09, 2015

Mozilla today announced to stop making and selling Firefox OS smartphones moving forward, indicating the failure in smartphone market, where Android and iOS dominate the market and combined made up nearly 98% volume share in global smartphone market during Q3 2015.

The first Firefox OS smartphone was launched in Q3 2013. Due to lacking top tier OEM partners, as well as poor end user experiences on low cost devices, Firefox failed to gain traction in the crowded marketplace. Our Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) services tracked Firefox OS reached the peak in 2014, but merely making up 0.1% volume share in global smartphone market. Apparently nobody can make any money from the failure of scaled volumes.

What lessons should other platforms to learn from it? We will keep tracking and post relevant reports later on.
