In the second quarter of 2022,
India was one of the few major markets where smartphone shipment growth exceeded 8% year-on-year, as the global market experienced a decline. Interestingly, much of the growth came from the newer challengers such as
Vivo,
Realme, and
Oppo, not the long-time incumbents
Xiaomi and
Samsung. Even so, Xiaomi had six smartphone models in the top-10 in Q2, whereas Samsung had none, according to
recent research from Strategy Analytics’
Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT).
Models such as the Oppo A16, Vivo T1 5G, Realme C31, and Realme C21Y all ranked above the first Samsung model, the A33 5G, at no.15. Even Apple ranked higher with its iPhone 12 5G at no.12, and OnePlus, still a small brand in India, took the no.13 spot with its Nord CE 2 5G. The top-10 smartphones in India are shown in the exhibit below.
Can Samsung recover its lost market share and get models in the top-10 once again, or is India increasingly taken over by the Chinese vendors following on the footsteps of Xiaomi? Stay on top of market developments and trends in India and other countries with SMT, accessible to our clients
