Apple’s spectacular quarterly results in Q1 2021 were largely propelled by the continued high demand for the 5G-enabled iPhone 12 series which had started an iPhone upgrade supercycle in October 2020. This supercycle continued in all major regions globally in Q1 2021, and North America and the United States were no exceptions.

According to recent research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, in the United States, the iPhone 12, 12 Pro Max, and another iPhone model stood head and shoulders above the rest of Apple’s iPhone model portfolio in terms of market share. The share of Apple’s shipments for each of these top-selling models was well above 20%, the iPhone 12 leading the pack at 29%, while the top-of-the-line iPhone 12 Pro Max had climbed to second rank, accounting for 25% of the shipments, see below. Even more impressive is the fact that the iPhone 12 alone accounted for some 20% of the entire 5G smartphone market in the United States. Apple was also the largest 5G smartphone vendor in the US by a wide margin, shipping 60% more 5G smartphones than the runner-up, Samsung.

Although the threat of component supply shortages looms over Apple for the rest of 2021, Apple’s performance in the first quarter of the year was solid, growing in each and every major region globally by double digits.
