Xiaomi Smartphone Models Take Over Huawei in Major European Markets in Q3’20

by Juha Winter | Nov 20, 2020

An interesting change has taken place in most smartphone markets of Western Europe, particularly so in the large countries such as the UK, France, Italy, and Spain, but also Germany. Huawei, the Chinese vendor that firmly held the no.3 or even no.2 position in most of the aforementioned countries for the past couple of years, has now given way to Xiaomi, a fellow Chinese vendor largely unknown in Europe before this year. Xiaomi typically had between 0 to 2 percent market share in early 2019 in the major European countries. In Q3’20, however, Xiaomi is right up there with Samsung in countries such as Spain in terms of market share, and definitely a strong runner-up after Samsung and Apple in most other WE countries.

According to recent research published by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Xiaomi had three entries in the top-10 best-selling smartphone models of Q3’20 in France and Italy, and had 4 out of 10 best-selling Android models in the UK. In Germany, Xiaomi had not yet broken through into the overall top-10 in Q3’20, but the vendor’s shipments were definitely growing rapidly. Spain was one of the forerunner markets for Xiaomi in WE, as the vendor achieved double-digit market share there already in Q3’19 and quite incredibly reached 30 percent in Q2’20. By the looks of it, Xiaomi has taken Europe by storm and is on its way to become even more popular than Huawei ever was.

Interested in the shipments, market share, wholesale pricing, and specs of smartphone models sold in Western Europe, other regions, or any of 88 countries covered by SMT? Clients of our service can get these, and many other types of data here.
