According to the latest research from SA’s Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Apple’s new iPhone 11 series secured a triple lead in the United States in terms of units shipped by model in the fourth quarter of 2019. The new iPhones had a very strong start already in Q3, helped by the timely launch of the mass-market model iPhone 11 already in September, along with its more expensive siblings, the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. The iPhone XR, a long-time bestseller for Apple, still managed to hold the top spot in Q3 due to its longer availability in the quarter, but in Q4, the tables turned in favor of the new iPhone 11 series. Indeed, the iPhone 11 shipped more units than any other smartphone model in the United States in the final quarter of 2019.
This is not to say that the iPhone XR didn’t sell well – the previous-generation model enjoyed strong shipments even into Q4, and the Xs Max and Xs did rather well, too. Samsung felt the pressure in the top-10, with so many popular models from Apple available and the launch of the new Galaxy S20 series waiting just around the corner in February, and so a few of its flagship models were pushed to lower ranks. The Galaxy Note 10 and a couple of new mid-range A series models shipped an impressive number of units, however.
In Canada, the iPhone 11 was also a very popular model in terms of shipments, although many older iPhone models such as the XR and even the 8 did well. Like in the US, Samsung’s flagship models lost ranks but its mid-range A series models fared reasonably well in the top-10.
