Even though Apple’s smartphone shipments went down by four percent year-on-year in North America in Q2 2019, the vendor remains firmly at the top in both the United States and Canada, also in terms of individual smartphone models sold in those markets. Samsung and LG, the other two major vendors in North America, declined considerably more than Apple in terms of shipment volume and market share.

As we’ve written earlier, Q2 is typically the strong quarter for Samsung’s new flagship lineup, usually launched at the end of Q1. This year, it’s the Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e in addition to the 5G version of the S10 that were introduced to the market in March. This time around, however, only the S10+ was really competing neck to neck with Apple’s latest generation of iPhones in the US. The “plus” model proved much more popular than its smaller siblings, the S10 and the S10e. The 5G model, promoted by Verizon in particular, saw only very limited demand in Q2. Samsung did have two mid-range models that performed well in the US market in Q2, but the flagship lineup overall could have definitely done better.

As for Canada where Apple is even stronger in terms of market share, it was the two most recent iPhone generations that saw particularly high shipments in Q2. With a couple of the even older iPhone models still remaining popular, there were altogether seven models from Apple in the top-10, although Samsung had more models looming in the ranks between 11 and 20.
