Xiaomi Smartphone Models Growing Stronger in Indonesia in Q1’19

by Juha Winter | Jun 13, 2019

Ever since overtaking Oppo as the second largest smartphone vendor in Indonesia in the second quarter of 2018, Xiaomi has held on tight to its no.2 position, even creeping on the heels of the market leader Samsung. Indeed, the market share difference between Samsung and Xiaomi was just 8 percent in Q1 2019, the lowest ever. This was clearly evident also in the list of best-selling smartphones in Indonesia, with Xiaomi making 4 entries in the top-10, one more than in the previous quarter. Together with Oppo, Xiaomi has put a lot of pressure on the local vendors in Indonesia, essentially capping their growth.

In its home market of China, Xiaomi has been losing share to its main domestic rivals Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo, and in Q1’19, there was no Xiaomi model in the top-10 list of best-selling smartphones in China. Xiaomi depends on foreign markets, mainly India but increasingly also Indonesia and other major overseas markets, for shipments and revenue growth. In India, Xiaomi has been the market leader since the second half of 2017 and the whole year of 2018, regularly having as many as 5 out of 10 best-selling smartphone models in the market, as was the case in Q1’19. In Europe, Xiaomi has shown impressive growth, but not enough to offset its losses in China and some other key markets.

Why is Xiaomi consistently so successful in India and now also in Indonesia, and why are its smartphone models like the Redmi 6A and Redmi Note 6 Pro beating popular rivaling models? Learn the answers and more from the recent research published by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service. We cover shipments, market share, wholesale pricing, and specs by model in all of the discussed markets and many more.
