As we’ve noted in earlier entries in this blog, Huawei is a major contender in many Western European countries, particularly so in the southern part of the region, in Spain and Italy. In these two countries, Huawei is the second largest smartphone vendor and has been steadily growing its market share, almost creeping on the heels of Samsung. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Huawei has also occasionally captured the top spot in the list of best-selling smartphones, or at least, it has given Samsung a run for its money with several models in the top-10. Western Europe is a key market for Huawei, and the recently announced US technology export ban would have serious consequences on the company’s market share there, unless a resolution is found. The Google service-enabled, GMS compliant Android has become the norm across Western Europe, as far as non-Apple smartphones are concerned.

According to the latest research published by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Huawei’s P20 Lite was the best-selling smartphone in Spain Q1, and the no.2 in Italy in Q1 2019. What’s more, the Mate 20 Lite, the P20, and the P Smart (2019) also enjoyed strong shipments in both markets, just ahead of the arrival of the new P30 series that started shipping in volumes in April. This is not to say that Samsung didn’t do well – the South Korean manufacturer had several models in the top-10 in both countries, and mid-range models such as the Galaxy J4+ (2018) stood out in addition to the Galaxy S9/S9+ and the new S10/S10+.
