Ever since Xiaomi captured the no.1 position as the leading smartphone vendor in India roughly a year ago in Q4 2017, the Chinese vendor has been on a roll. Not only has Xiaomi held on fiercely to its top rank before Samsung and other vendors, it has also managed to grow at a very rapid rate, outgrowing pretty much every major competitor in the country.

We’ve seen Xiaomi models populate the list of the top-10 best-selling smartphones in India in increasing numbers over the past few quarters, but in the third quarter of 2018, Xiaomi really hit the jackpot, having an overwhelming 6 out 10 models in the top-10, according to the latest research published by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service.

While India has traditionally been a very fragmented smartphone market, and still is in terms of available models, there has been a trend of consolidation leading towards fewer smartphone vendors that really move the needle in the market. Just looking at the top-50 best-selling smartphone models in India, it’s mainly Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo that appear there, with the local vendor Micromax also having a few key models that were sold in very high numbers. Huawei, the world’s no.2 smartphone vendor, is present in India, but its shipments are in a different league from the “big four” vendors discussed above. Apple is also a minor player, with no models in the top-50 at all and the iPhone 8 appearing as the brand’s top-selling model many ranks below 50.
