Xiaomi, Huawei Smartphone Models on Top in China in Q1 2018

by Juha Winter | Jun 08, 2018

The first quarter of 2018 again witnessed declining year-on-year smartphone shipments in China, following a similar pattern to Q4’17, with only a handful of vendors experiencing significant growth. As in the previous quarter, Xiaomi was one of these vendors, ranking fourth overall as a vendor in China (and actually in the whole world as of Q1’18) and having two devices in the top-10 of bestselling smartphone models, as reported by our Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service.

Although the other domestic vendors such as Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo still have the upper hand in China, Xiaomi is the only major vendor that has been able to grow at a high double-digit pace in YoY terms. Combined with its success at expanding rapidly overseas and also in the offline channel, this bodes well for the company’s upcoming IPO.

While Apple took the top spot in China with its iPhone X in the previous quarter, this time it was Xiaomi and Huawei models that were at the very top, their demand fueled by the Chinese New Year and its shopping season.
