Xiaomi and Oppo Smarthones Growing Rapidly in Indonesia Although Samsung Leads in Models in Q2 2017

by Juha Winter | Sep 08, 2017

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, Samsung had four models on the top-10 list of best-selling smartphones in Indonesia in the second quarter of 2017, one less in the previous quarter. While the vendor has been able to maintain its market share relatively steady over the past year or two, at slightly below 30 percent, Chinese vendors such as Oppo and Xiaomi are increasingly prominent on the list of bestselling smartphones. Oppo was the first to grow at a rapid pace in the Indonesian market, but now it’s Xiaomi that’s breaking all growth records in Q2. Taiwanese Asus, which has long held third position in the market in terms of overall shipments, appears to be giving way to the Chinese duo. But what about the local Indonesian vendors such as Advan Digital and Smartfren, how are they doing? Are the increased government regulation and requirements for local content helping them to defend their home turf against foreign competition?
