US$191-299 Price Tier Increasingly Important in List of Global Top-500 Smartphones, Q1 2017

by Juha Winter | Jul 03, 2017

During most of the year, Apple’s latest iPhone range and Samsung’s Galaxy S series and Galaxy J series dominate the list of globally best-selling smartphones, at least as far as the top-10 list is concerned. In the first quarter of 2017, Samsung’s S7 and S7 edge flagships had already faded into the background a bit, since many people were waiting for the highly anticipated Galaxy S8 and S8+ to start shipping in April. Q1 is the quarter of the Chinese New Year, however, and many Chinese smartphone brands and models see their peak sales in the quarter, appeasing the vast domestic demand. In Q1, we saw the Oppo R9s rise all the way to the top-3, with only the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus beating it in terms of global shipments. That’s pretty good for a device that isn’t widely available outside of China. Also, we saw Oppo A31 and the Vivo X9 making it to the top-10.

As we’ve said before, for the very high end of the smartphone market and the top two vendors the market remains fairly predictable. But what about other price tiers and somewhat smaller, up-and-coming smartphone vendors?

According to the latest research by Strategy Analytics’ Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) service, the US$191-$299 price band (wholesale ASP) increased its share of the models on the top-500 list of globally best-selling smartphones from 14 to 16 percent, whereas most other price tiers declined in percentage share. Furthermore, 10 models belonging to the same price band ranked in the top-50 and reached between 1.5 and 4.8 million units in shipments. So, outside of the very high end, this is clearly a very important price tier for vendors looking to achieve scale globally.
