Egypt was the second largest smartphone market in the Africa and Middle East region in Q3 2022. In the quarter, it declined sharply by -33% YoY and -11% QoQ. It is the second successive quarter of decline for this prominent market in the region. Government’s clampdown on imports introducing a 10% custom duty on mobiles has triggered this decline in 2022. We estimate the year’s smartphone volumes to be significantly below than that of 2021. The downturn in Egyptian market comes in as the whole of African market too declined by -13% YoY and -2% QoQ.
Xiaomi led the market followed by Samsung and OPPO. The three accounted for 23%, 15% and 13% market shares respectively. Chinese vendors accounted for nearly 3/4th of the smartphone volumes to Egypt in Q3 2022, the share being at similar levels from almost a year back.
Multiple vendors such as Samsung, Vivo , OPPO have scaled up local manufacturing in the country in the country in recent times. Is this the way for others too?
