Samsung leads in 7 of the top 15 handset markets in a difficult Q1 2022

Global handset shipments declined significantly by -16% annually in Q1 2022, on volume of 391 million units. Geo-political tensions, supply issues in associated with component shortage, assembly disruptions in many countries, and distribution challenges, rising inflation across the globe all heavily impacted the global handset market during Q1 2022.

The 15 countries tracked in our report accounted for a combined 60% of total global handset shipments in Q1 2022. The top 5 handset vendors in our report, Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo accounted for almost 6 in 10 handsets shipped  in Q1 2022. Most of major 15 countries have continued to suffer from quite a negative growth due to the factors listed above. Q2 is expected to remain challenging.

Of the 15 countries listed in our report, Samsung was the number one handset vendor in seven countries including India, South Korea, Brazil. India was a positive with Samsung retaining top position for the second quarter in a row. 

Apple is the no.1 handset vendor in six countries including Germany, France and the US. Indian volume continues to improve but share remains sub 5%, 

Xiaomi had a tough quarter globally but retained third place. Xiaomi remained strong in many countries such as Spain  and Russia where it is neck and neck with Samsung. It is noteworthy that the vendor is growing its market share in major Latin American countries including Brazil and Mexico.
