In the just concluded budget announcement, Indian government has removed exemptions on multiple mobile components and most of this to come into effect from April1 2021. Our recent report on the second largest market did indicate a decline in 2020 overall. It is available here from Smartphone Country Share Tracker (SCST) Service.
While the move would give further impetus to local manufacturing it does have an impact on prices of smartphones moving north. The vendors are more likely to pass it on to the consumers. The mobile components falling under the ambit of these new announcements include Mobile Phone Chargers, Printed Circuit Boards (PCB’s), Camera Modules and Connectors.
Mobile phone and component manufacturing has witnessed a sharp upside in India in recent times as can be inferred from our report on manufacturing available here.
