Reliance-Jio Launches its 4G Feature Phone and is Disruptive

by Rajeev Nair | Jul 21, 2017

Reliance in its annual general meeting today, announced the entry of Reliance-Jio into the 4G feature phone segment. The entry of Reliance-Jio, as predicted by us in our pre-launch post has been disruptive.

Reliance-Jio’s 4G VoLTE feature phone called the JioPhone is effectively free, as the users would be paying a security deposit of INR 1500 (US$23) only at the time of booking and even this would be refundable after three years, on returning the device. The phone would go on beta mode by 15th August while the pre-order booking starts on 24th August 2017. JioPhone would be available to the end consumers in the month of September 2017.

JioPhone users would be privileged to special recharge packs of INR 153 (US$2.3) to include unlimited data, SMS and voice calls lasting a month. This has further been broken down by mini packs including a two day and a weeklong validity one, with each costing (US$ .3) and US$.8) respectively.

Our Quarterly India Report from the Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) Service captures the feature shipments to the country and we expect a strong surge in the segment with the entry of Reliance-Jio.
