Best-Selling Smartphones : Size Matters, but Too Big Phones Are Less Chosen

by Woody Oh | Sep 15, 2015

The latest global best-selling smartphone tracker by quarter, 'Global Smartphone Shipments by Family Model Q2 2015', published under our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) service, is illustrating that phablets over 5.0 inch display size are clearly gaining more traction than one year or two years ago, in terms of the number of phablets ranking 50 best-sellers during Q2 2015 and the total market share taken by those popular phablets. So, it would be factual that size matters when it comes to the selection of smartphones.

However, too big size is less chosen by consumers worldwide. According to the report, only one model out of 50 best-selling smartphones during Q2 2015 comes with over 6.0 inch display size, which we define as super-phablet, taking less than 1% of total market share of global 50 best-selling smartphones. This result can be interpreted that people have more preference for the size less than 6.0 inch, mostly because of the comforable one-handed usage.

The in-depth analysis on the primary factors of the best-selling smartphones in Q2 2015, such as price-tiers, operating system, air interface, camera and battery, in addition to the display size can be viewed here, also published under HCST service.
