Samsung leads 4 of the top 5 South East Asian Handset markets

The combined top 5 South East Asian markets took 16% share of the overall APAC handset shipments in Q2 2015. Our recent research from HCST service, available here takes a look at the next 15 emerging handset markets, with the top 5 from South East Asia featuring in this list.

Per the report, the top 5 handset markets for this sub region include Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia, in that order. Indonesia though takes up 44% share of the total shipments from these five and has more than double the shipments of the second ranked Vietnam.

While Samsung leads in 4 of these top 5 markets, local vendors are posing a major challenge to its leadership particularly in Philippines and Indonesia. As with other Asian handset markets, Chinese vendors have successfully penetrated this region too, with Lenovo and Huawei being the stand outs. While from the global handset vendor list other than the leader, ASUS and Apple find consistent traction.
