According to the newly published report from our Handset Country Share Tracker (HCST) services : China Smartphone Vendor and OS Marketshare: Q2 2013, China smartphone shipments surged +103% YoY to record levels in Q2 2013. Samsung remained in first place, while Coolpad tied with Lenovo for second position. Meanwhile, ZTE and Huawei ranked in fourth and fifth position, respectively.

Coolpad was a star performer in Q2 2013, tieing with Lenovo and capturing the second largest smartphone vendor position for the first time ever in its history. Strong performances in TD-SCDMA and operator channels are the key drivers behind the surging volumes. Lenovo took  joint-second place due to a reasonable performance in the WCDMA and TD-SCDMA categories.

Samsung still has a fight on its hands to retain the no.1 spot in China as the local players up their game. Apple lost more ground and slipped out of the top-5 list in China this quarter due to a limited presence in the high-growth TD-SCDMA segment.

In contrast, top-tier local brands ZTE and Huawei maintained the position in the top-5 list. Second-tier local brands are improving and catching up quickly, including Xiaomi, Tianyu, Hisense, Gionee, Meizu, OPPO etc.

Xiaomi was the other star performer this quarter and solidified its leading position among second-tier local brands. All local Chinese brands combined took 70% of total smartphone volume this quarter, up from just 56% one year ago.
