Sub-Saharan Africa is the largest sub-region for 3G smartphones

  • Sub-Saharan Africa takes over 60% of all 3G smartphones.
  • 4G is shrinking in everywhere else except Africa.
  • Africa is the only region with positive CAGR in 4G smartphones for 2021-2027, thus Africa is a good place to look at if one is making affordable 4G devices.

  • China is the leading 5G country with 37% share and 86% 5G penetration.
  • India is the leading 4G country with 71% 4G penetration and 6.6% 5G share.
  • US is worth looking into if one seeks to sell premium 5G devices. US 5G penetration is already 83% giving it 14% share of 5G smartphones.
  • The next decade will be 5G decade before 6G comes along.
