by Ken Hyers | Feb 28, 2022

The tragic war in Ukraine is still in its early days. The suffering of its people must be first and foremost in our minds. It's impact will be felt globally, including by the smartphone industry.

A protracted conflict will affect the ability of semiconductor suppliers to manufacture key components for smartphones. Neon, a noble gas, is produced in Ukraine, which supplies much of the world's purified neon for the semiconductor industry.

We see three scenarios, a Best Case, Worst Case and Preferred (or expected) scenario as relates to the smartphone industry:
Best Worst Scenario Ukraine

We look at how the war could effect smartphone production in a new report from our Device Technologies service.  The report examines how neon is used, what alternatives exist for semiconductor manufacturers and how this will impact smartphone production. Multiple scenarios are weighed to determine which is most likely in 2022. Clients can access the report here.
