According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global 5G smartphone shipments hit a record 269 million in 2020, rising over 1,300 percent from 19 million in 2019. Huawei was the world’s number one 5G smartphone vendor with 29 percent marketshare.
The global 5G smartphone market is soaring because vendors are flooding the market with hundreds of new models, device prices are tumbling, and Chinese consumers are rapidly upgrading to 5G smartphones.
We estimate Huawei shipped 78.2 million 5G smartphones for 29 percent marketshare worldwide in 2020, down from 37 percent in 2019. Huawei remains number one in 5G smartphones, but US-China trade tensions in the second half of 2020 capped the vendor’s growth. We estimate Apple shipped 52.2 million 5G smartphones for 19 percent marketshare worldwide in 2020, up sharply from zero percent share in 2019. Together the top two vendors, Huawei and Apple captured nearly half of all 5G smartphone shipments in 2020.
