Global Handset Shipments Collapse in Q1 2020

by Ken Hyers | May 06, 2020

New research from Strategy Analytics shows that global legitimate handset shipments collapsed, by -15% annually in Q1 2020. By any measure the collapse in handset shipments was the worst ever single-quarter downturn for the mobile phone industry.

LTE (4G), which by technology is the largest segment of global mobile phones, took the biggest hit. 2G phones, the second largest segment, was flat YtY, reflecting ongoing demand for basic phones primarily in emerging markets such as Africa. Meanwhile 5G showed explosive annual growth, albeit from a very small base.

Samsung led in total shipment volumes and across key categories including 5G, while Itel held the top spot in the still active GPRS/EDGE category.

In our extensive report, Strategy Analytics provides worldwide quarterly handset shipments by the major 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G protocols, for the top 30 vendors, from 2001 to Q1 2020. Clients of our Device Technologies research practice can access the report here.
