5G Handset Volumes Growing, but LTE Makes of Bulk of Volumes

by Ken Hyers | Nov 04, 2019

Global legitimate handset shipments improved by 2% annually in Q3 2019. LTE handsets dominated total volumes but once again failed to show positive growth. Samsung holds the top spots in 5G and LTE while Itel and HMD Nokia battle for the top spot in the still active GPRS/EDGE category.

5G handset shipment volumes are growing rapidly, having in the space of just three quarters grown from just a few thousand devices shipped to several million. While 2019 is the introductory year for 5G smartphones, and 2020 will be the breakout year with volumes of more than 150 million, 4G LTE still makes up the vast bulk of volumes shipped.
