5G smartphones have arrived, though their sales volumes in 2019 will be minuscule compared to overall smartphone sales volumes this year. But those small volumes belie the huge impact 5G will have on industry revenues in coming years. Simply put, 5G smartphones will be comparatively expensive in the early years as new technology and higher IPR relative to older generation technologies will push up the prices 5G smartphones. Those prices will fall, and as they do sales volumes will rise. By mid-decade 5G smartphones will contribute over half of all smartphone revenues globally.
