MWC 2019 Device Blog: Day 1: Smartphones

Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) - the largest and arguably the most important mobile industry event – is taking place in Barcelona, Spain, from Feb 25 to Feb 28, exhibiting plethora of new devices and setting the hottest trends in 2019.

As usual, Strategy Analytics will have a large team of analysts across Smartphones, Drones, Robots, Tablets, Wearables, Components, Smart Home and Connected Cars in attendance.

Although the event is set to officially kick off on Feb 25 (Monday) vendors were eager to showcase their new devices in advance.

On Day One, we are turning our attention to some interesting devices from OPPO, Archos and Energizer demoed at the show.

OPPO: The Chinese vendor was first from the major players to make an announcement in Barcelona, showing a prototype of what is going to be its first 5G smartphone. Scarce in detail, the company only revealed that the device will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset with X50 modem and it will arrive on the market sometime in the middle of the year.

OPPO also announced a new camera system that will enable a 10x lossless zoom. That will be achieved with the help of a periscopic module that can minimize the thickness of the lens. Currently even the most premium smartphones can only manage 2x or 3x optical zoom. The new camera system will be coming to OPPO’s smartphones in the second quarter of 2019.

: The French vendor showcased its new flagship smartphone – the Archos Diamond. The device comes with a bezel-less 6.39-inch AMOLED display, and it has a pop-up camera and an in-display fingerprint reader. Archos Diamond will run on Android 9.0 (Pie) and pack a 4GB/128GB memory combination. It will be available from May 2019 at a wholesale price of US$250.

For the more price-conscious consumers, the company also launched the Archos Oxygen 57, 63 and 68XL. Starting at US$80 wholesale price, the smartphones will give you LTE connectivity, 19:9 full screen display and Android 9.0 (Pie).

Energizer: Under the exclusive license from Energizer, Avenir Telecom unveiled the Power Max P18K Pop. Despite its rather long and confusing name, the device makes impression with its 18,000 mAh battery - the highest capacity battery in a smartphone.

The Power Max P18K Pop features five cameras -- two front-facing pop-up cameras with 16MP and 2MP lenses and three rear cameras with 12MP, 5MP and 2MP lenses. The device is powered by the MediaTek Helio P70 chipset and it offers 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Stay tuned for Day Two blog tomorrow when we expect Huawei, LG and HMD (Nokia) to unveil their new set of mobile devices.
