On 20.2.2019 Samsung officially launched its first
foldable display smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Device is the first with inward folding main display and smaller outer display. The device was already teased by Samsung last year, but now the device is officially unveiled.
The device will
set a totally new benchmark for
foldable smartphones. Royole beat all others to the market by unveiling its foldable device last October but when compared to the device Samsung just announced it looks like a poor prototype. The design and functionality of the Samsung device is unparalleled. So far.

The device has a smaller
4.6 inch cover display that has HD+ resolution and
21:9 aspect ratio. The real beauty is revealed when that device is unfolded. inside lies
7.3 inch 16:10 aspect ratio AMOLED Infinity Flex display with
QXGA+ resolution. Snapdragon 855 runs the show and device has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal memory. Device has total of 6 cameras. Three at the back (12MP+12MP+16MP), two inside (10MP+8MP) and one 8MP in the cover.
Frame is naturally aluminium and Samsung has developed a state of the art hinge system for the device that is covered so it won't gather dirt. As it is a Samsung premium device it has fast wireless charging as well as latest version of Qualcomm fast wired charging. The device has two batteries that together give the device 4380mAh of battery capacity. The fingerprint sensor is located on the side edge for security.
Samsung has naturally partnered heavily with Google and Samsung is the first device maker to really put it to use. Applications that are running on the cover display will seamlessly transition to the main display and expand to reveal more content. This feature is called App Continuity and it is something that Google added to the Android platform. The feature is not Samsung proprietary so we can expect other foldables to take advantage of the same feature in the future.
Just like we predicted in our technology report:
Foldable Display Smartphones: Pricey and Complex Devices Will Transform the Industry the first foldable devices will be extremely expensive and Galaxy Fold didn't disappoint in that. Samsung says the Galaxy Fold will be available on April 26 and it is going to come in 4G LTE and 5G versions. The LTE variant retail pricing starts at US$1980. 5G version pricing was not disclosed at the event.
Despite the
ultra-premium pricetag the Galaxy Fold is the benchmark device for all future foldable phones - that bar is set very high.
