Vivo's First 5G Smartphone Brings Design to a Whole New Level

by Ville-Petteri Ukonaho | Jan 24, 2019

BEIJING, January 24, 2019 - Just a day after Meizu announced their futuristic buttonless design concept phone, vivo reveals its counterpart the APEX 2019 to the public. The new concept phones from vivo and Meizu are clearly showing the direction for others where the conventional smartphone design should go in the future.

The APEX 2019 introduces vivo's new design called FullView that has no openings or seams and has very slim bezels for simpler usage of the phone. Nearly all of the front is display with no front camera. As this is still a concept phone, the final version might get a punch hole for the front camera.

The phone includes many breakthrough technologies. One of the most exiting is the full-display fingerprint scanning that takes in-display scanning to a whole new level. In APEX 2019 the whole display acts as a fingerprint scanner and user can touch anywhere to open the phone. If it works as promised, it is the most advanced in-display fingerprint solution to date.

Just like in Meizu Zero the device uses piezoelectric transducer, called Body SoundCasting, placed underneath the display that is capable of giving sound through the display so all speakers are omitted from the phone. Similarities do not end there, just like Zero, the APEX 2019 also uses haptic feedback induced capacitive pressure sensing buttons they call Touch Sense.

For connectivity vivo has taken a different approach. Instead of going all wireless like Zero, APEX uses magnetic connector, called MagPort, to deliver charging current and data to the phone. The dual-camera on the rear is a 12MP + 13MP with a LED flash. There is no information available if APEX uses similar eSIM technology as Zero but given the sleek buttonless design that is a high possibility.

The APEX 2019 is also vivo's first 5G phone running the state of the art Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 under the hood (compared to SD845 in Meizu Zero) so there is enough torque to run whatever user desires. To ensure seamless functionality also in the software side vivo has included 12GB RAM and 256GB internal memory to the device. Device comes equipped with JoviAI assistant which is vivo's additon to the growing selection of assistants from different vendors.

The device is an impressive piece of hardware and futuristic design. Including many highly innovative features, vivo APEX together with Meizu Zero clearly shows how the leading design innovation is no longer coming from the traditional vendors but from the aspiring Chinese vendors.
